Venice, a cesspool. STAY AWAY.
Florence, GLORIOUS for lovers of the Renaissance!
Rome, spectacular---historians' heaven.
(John does the detailed travel journals.)

  1. I never got to Venice, but thanks for the warning. Florence is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to anywhere. Absolutely wonderful! And Rome for me was like being a kid in a candy store. If you get a chance to visit Pompeii, I would definitely recommend it.

  2. Oh dear, why is Venice so bad? Was it flooded? I always heard Florence was the city to avoid, but it's good you caught it off-season.
    How's the gelato?

  3. My time in Italy took me to Florence many times (one does not travel in Northern Italy w/out going through Florence). I loved the city. My time in Venice was short so I have no comment. As for Rome, chuck the tour guides and buy a Michelin Guide. You see and enjoy more on your own than in a crowd being pushed and shoved.
