Giant sheets of ice are smashing against our concrete bank as the Grand River roars by. A few minutes ago as I was sitting in my chair by the window reading, I heard the crashing. The water is rising fast, though not expected to get to flood stage before it comes back down. There are dangers, however, in the winter river when ice jams create flooding in a matter of hours--not the usual two or three-day warning. At this point we're both relaxed but it doesn't take much to get our nerves on edge.
