WOMEN IN THE SBC

Did you know that there are ordained women in the Southern Baptist Convention? Churches are autonomous, and despite the very conservative swing the SBC has taken in recent years, some churches ordain women. I got a call from Jennifer, a former student of mine at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. We talked for most of an hour this morning. She wants me to preach at her ordination service at a church near Richmond sometime in late September or early October. It will be a wonderful time of celebration--and a little vacation for us as we visit some sites in nearby Williamsburg and Washington D.C.

TWO POEMS

The latest issue (July/August 2007) of Books & Culture contains 2 poems worth pondering. Here are the first lines:

God is so angry with us
That he takes our wits before
He takes our life. . . . (Laurence Wieder, "Your Melodies")

From the blank hush of my cubicle, I listen
to the library. Someone is coughing,
someone confiding plans to a phone.
In the cloistered cell next to mine,
the sweet sound of a page turning. (Paul J. Willis, "Library")
